Good design stems from fully understanding the client’s needs, the functional requirements of the building being designed, choice of appropriate building materials and an awareness of climatic and other effects specific to the site.
Raised on a farm in South Australia I have spent most of my adult life in the Northern half of Australia – including Western Australia, the Northern Territory and Queensland, so am particularly interested in designing using passive solar principles for tropical climates – (use of landscaping and other shading devices, site orientation and channelling of cooling breezes works much better up here than air-conditioning).
Living on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef – beach houses are a speciality.
Apart from being a parent I have worked in a variety of occupations including medical, commercial and the hospitality industry which have all given me a wealth of experience in function of place.
Tertiary trained at Queensland University of Technology I graduated with Distinction in 1989 and during my uni years worked for Phillips, Smith, Conwell Architects, being fortunate to gain experience on a number of design projects for the general public including:
Now working as a sole practitioner in Central Queensland I am acutely aware of our aging population, special needs within the community and the changing structure of the ‘typical family unit’.
However I continue to derive great satisfaction in designing logical, amenable buildings which welcome people and encourage their enjoyable interaction. |
