design studio 22 has been creating living and working spaces for many years. Originally formed by Richard and Lynette Malcolm in 2004 following many years of experience in design, building and real estate, they saw a need for providing a collaborative team from different disciplines working together to create innovative holistic designs. They also recognized that clients needed precise and detailed specification documentation for obtaining accurate quotations from builders that reflected the exact choices they had made during the design process.
To this end they have attracted a professional team of independent, talented designers who design spectacular homes and businesses economically and efficiently to incorporate this point of difference into their project.
design studio 22 had humble beginnings, expanding from a home-based studio with a Building Designer, Architect, two Interior Designers and an Administration Assistant. With the purchase of a light-filled space in 2008 in the beautiful Coffs Harbour Jetty on the North Coast of NSW, we have settled into our dynamic new studio, to continue to create our award winning work by a team of 16 design professionals.

Business Development Manager
Joanne Higgs - Grew up in Coffs Harbour and has worked extensively overseas and in Australia in hotel management and account management in telecommunications and IT. Joanne has always had a keen interest in design and architecture and together with her organisational and business skills is an invaluable addition to design studio 22. Joanne manages our projects and presents our products and services to the marketplace.
Architectural Designers
Harry Sprintz, Architect (Disability Access Design and Planning) – Nominated Architect, ARB/NSW Reg No 5819 & ACT/ARB Reg No 1067.
design studio 22 is proud to have formed a professional alliance with Harry Sprintz to promote and implement equitable accessibility through excellence in design. The depth of his experience in architecture, interior design and disability access design spans over 45 years, from private housing to commercially orientated projects. Harry’s mantra of “getting things right” by putting human accessibility, comfort and safety first is at the forefront of his design philosophy. He holds a Masters Degree in Design Research for Disability and has authorised seventeen (17) published papers on subjects dealing with disability access design, aged care and safety
Richard Malcolm (Building Designer/Director) - A multi award winning Building Designer with a background in real estate, property and hands on building. Hundreds of his designs have been constructed throughout VIC, NSW and QLD each encompassing an individual style. He is always mindful that even spectacular features must be practical and economical to construct. Richard imparts these important philosophies as he oversees and advises the entire design team

Tony Ross (Team Leader/Building design + Drafting) – Has worked on multi-million dollar commercial projects in partnership with his father in their business Ross Associates. During his eighteen (18) year career as Architectural Technician and Project Manager, Tony worked on school building projects along with residential and commercial – both new and renovation projects, townhouses and multi storey developments. His enthusiasm, experience and knowledge is evident in each project undertaken and supervised at design studio 22.
Bruce Pilgrim (Senior Building Designer) - Multi Award Winning Senior Building Designer and a Woolgoolga local, he has a natural flair for design. Bruce worked in the mechanical design field, factory relocation and Industrial Design before turning to Building Design with architectural practices covering pharmaceutical, schools, residential and renovations. Bruce has a very creative mind and a great eye for detail, perfect for the discipline required in design and drafting.
Katrina Wade (Building Designer) – Gained her degree in Architectural Studies at QUT in Brisbane before moving back to her home town of Grafton. She is very passionate and enthusiastic about residential design and has worked in conjunction with the team in Coffs Harbour as the local Clarence Valley designer for design studio 22 for over two (2) years.
Ryan Wisely (Draftperson/Design Assistant) -Grew up in Macleanand has completed his Diploma of Building Design and Technology. Previous to working at design studio 22, Ryan worked for an architect on the Gold Coast and now has the role of permanent Draftsman and Design Assistant at design studio 22. He is a very skilful draftsman and is working hard to increase his proficiency in all the areas necessary in a design practice.
Nick Radford (Landscape/Environmental Designer) Is a holistic Environmental Building and Landscape Designer, having travelled the world observing sustainable cultures and alternative building methods. He has certificates in Horticulture, Permaculture, Organic Farming and completed three years in Bachelor of Architecture. He has received an award from OTEN in Sustainable Building and is currently completing his Bachelor of Environmental Science. He is a member of Australian Institute of Landscape Designers and Managers and specialises in easy maintenance native gardens and creating “mini ecosystems”.
Interior Designers
Kate Lane (Team Leader/Interior Designer) – Formerly Executive Director of NSW Sports Council for The Disabled, has studied and worked in Interior Design, Graphic Arts, Event & Recreation Management and Real Estate for over thirty (30) years. She has hands on experience in building, renovating and project management for many of her own homes and has a great eye for detail when selecting finishes to stylise homes for her clients. She listens to her clients and has the great skill of interpreting their needs and particular styles, all the while making their experience extremely enjoyable. She is an inspiration to her clients and her team.
Jayne Chudzik (Senior Interior Designer) –Senior Interior Designer, conducted her own interior decorating and design business for 20 years in the Albury/Wodonga area, giving her broad experience in commercial, corporate, health, aged care, project building and residential design. She also lectured at the local TAFE conducting small group session on particular aspects of decorating. Jayne was been assisting clients with home and restaurant interiors and refurbishment in the local Coffs area for five (5) years prior to joining design studio 22.
Jess McCormack (Interior Designer) -Is a local Grafton designer who has extensive experience in customer service and Interior Design, holding a diploma in Professional Interior Design. She has a great understanding of building design and plans, colour and product knowledge particularly in tiles having worked in the industry for eight (8) years.
Brooke Want (Interior Design Assistant) -Is currently undertaking her Diploma of Commercial Arts specialising in Interior Design, whilst working as an Interior Design Assistant at design studio 22. Brooke, a local Coffs Harbour resident, has drawn house plans and experimented with colours from a young age. Her youthful exuberance and love of design made her a natural to slot into this role where she is a valued team member.
Administration Assistants
Jenny Porter Undertakes all the important jobs that keep the business flowing. Book keeping, answering phones, keeping the studio equipped and making coffee for the clients. She always knows where everything is and keeps this creative team in line.
Nancy Henderson Works as our Junior Administration Assistant, supporting the team with filing, keeping up the stock of resource material plus copying and collating client Selection Schedules and Builder Quoting folders. She is very quick to learn and can assist in many other areas when required.
